Supports PCI ADSL Modems

Hurray for version 1.4 - it supports my PCI Modem card. This makes it a neat system - no exta boxes or cables.

Once I''ve read up on IP chains etc., it''s going to be protecting my system.

Thanks

David

What a great project.

I have been using it for a long time now, and use it for 13 different firewalls/VPN solutions. This is one great piece of software.

Thank you for all the great work, fellas!

IPCOP is great!!!!
Although I don''t know why it doesn''t support to be used with ethernet modems... It should be simple, at this, do routing from the red to the green although it is an already-negotiated internet flux coming up from a simple modem....
:-(

eheh...

My boss/friend introduced me to IPCop 1.3 and Ive been using it for almost 1 year now. I''ve kept it updated with every update and have been following the 1.4 journey, right from the first Beta.

The betas did not work with my modem to start with, but once it got to RC4, it worked fine.

Then...the FINAL RELEASE CAME!!! I updated to it right away and I havent had any problems since. Ive noticed a big improvement in uptime and stability since 1.3.

Connections are established easier, DHCP and Port Forwarding is purrrfect.

Congrats to the programmers. Well done on a good job. I will continue to follow IPCop right through. By the time you get to 2.0, I think everyone should have IPCop running on their network.

Its the most seucre firewall Ive found over the years, so good that we run it in my office here and at work. We also have it running in quite a number of our clients offices.

Once again, well done!!

Just love 1.4. I had used Soothwall and switched to IPcop over a year ago for my home network but have been so impressed that I have used it in several production environments to provide secure internet access and cheap/efficient VPNs between sites.

Well done. This is a killer app.

I think its a wonderful product, I migrated to it from Smoothwall for one reason initially: the support of dynamic hostnames in the NET to NET VPN configuration, from there on I''ve been very impressed with the product and how it functions. Currently, I am running 1.4.1 on my home network as well as 3 of my customer''s LAN''s, its a great product.

After looking over several options for a router/firewall distro to replace my broken Linksys, I picked IPCop. This is the first "router/firewall" distro I have used. While I am not entirely new to Unix/Linux I am no expert either. Based on my experience with other very high-end security products, IPCop is amazing. Even though it is not perfect it is by far better than any SOHO router out there. I would even say that it''s better and less buggy than the very expensive high-end Solaris-based system I used to manage. Very solid. Very very fast on my AMD K6/2-500. I''m hooked. Very nice product.

I am impressed! I have been playing around with IP Tables, but found it just a bit too complicated for someone like me who''se "real job" is not to maintain the firewall. This makes it so simple, anyone can use it, and it supports exactly everything I need. The best solutions are always the ones that simplify without dumbing down. I consider IPCop one of those solutions.

Bought a 'refurbished' Compaq SFF PIII-733Mhz-128Mb-10Gb PC yesterday and decided to install 1.4.6. The setup was up and running within 10 minutes and is about to replace the good old HP-Vectra PII-266 which has been running the 1.2/1.3 versions of IPCop for almost two years now! I am not a Linux/FireWall guru, and I do not need to be because of the easy set-up and all the rest of the information: donated some time ago!! it's good alright but needs more built-in facilities such as the ability to drop persistant connections you don't want on the 'connections' page. Here's how I want to see this done...... At present you can click an IP and whois it. I'd like to see a pop-out menu with - whois, drop now, drop in 15mins, etc There also seems to be a lot of memory leak over time (thought only windows had that problem) so I reboot when I think it's a little sluggish. Also required is option of which modules to NOT INSTALL !

I just found out about it today, downloaded the ISO and installed it using vmware to "check it out". Up until now, I had been using SuSE 9.3, stripped of X and any of the fancy stuff, on a Dell Latitude laptop with a PCMCIA NIC for Green and a Linksys USB NIC for Red. I always thought it a bit overkill for a firewall, so I started looking at smoothwall, redwall, sentry, etc. After seeing how smoothly the install went under vmware, I quickly burned a CD and popped it in the Dell. Half an hour later I was up and running with IPCop! Very nice. I especially like the work put into the web interface. Under SuSE, I had been ssh'ing in and running Yast to do my management stuff. Had tried Webmin, but it was so slow! This seems to be a tightly integrated distro. Very well done!

    I am really amazed.
Let's consider my journey to get here :

I needed a way to share my Internet Connection (ISDN) with my Linux Server and my Mac OS X, avoiding purchasing any new hardware; I also can (and actually want to) onlygive internet access to the other systems when my Win desktop is running (my ISDN TA is not supported under Linux :-().

    1. On my W2K System, I started setting up Squid under Cygwin (after patching the exe), this proved to be a working solution. As side effect, I finally got knowledgable about Squid :-)
    2. I still had to lock down the Linux Server and the Mac OSX which took me a lot of time. Still, security was an issue for me.
    3. Thinking about what would be the next steps, I started to look for add'l HW to set up a Linux FW by myself until I found an article in the german magazine c't explaining how to create a home DMZ with ipcop and VMWare.
    4. I decided to try this out on the WinXP System and well this proved to be unbelievable easy :
      • My modem connection is shared with a VMWare virtual NIC
      • Connected the Ethernet NIC to a 2nd VMWare virtual NIC (green)
      • Created a 3rd virtual NIC in case I want to put a Web Server in the DMS (Orange)
      • I set up ipcop in a VMWare VM
      • activated the proxy
      • redefined the proxy in all system in my LAN as well as the default GW
This works and I did not even edit a config file, set up the FW rules. Install VMWare + ipcop took me 30min ! And all for free
The only task which took a lot of time was downloading ipcop over the ISDN line.

    Guys : T H A N K Y O U for your work !

This is great SW, great selection and configuration and only Open Source SW can make this possible

IPCop is absolutely amazing! thanks to the excellent work on the core and some very neat addons, almost anybody can build an inexpensive internet security appliance to rival and even surpass many commercially available products that cost $$thousands$$ I use it at home and on 2 production firewalls at the not-for-profit I work for, and I would have no qualms in implementing it at corporate level. Used it for 8 months. THANK YOU TEAM!

Does IPCop support two RED settings for channel bounding? Which means we can using 2 ISP bandwidth combine together and can share the bandwidth each other or doing the load balance. If the current version doesn't support, I hope can put this feature on future Road Map. Regards.

ipcop is the only gnu/linux distribution that takes a strong stance on Free (GPL) software, unlike other firewall distributions that often include proprietary software. Also, ipcop is a truly powerful, simple and easy-to-use system, along with plethora of Free (mostly GPL) addons. Long live ipcop !

I couldn't beleive it was true... IPCop is the best Router/Firewall I ever been using. Beats all the router-boxes out there by far. Good work, team! I wonder though, if there will be any support for the Zyxel 630-C USB ADSL modem. I got one 630-11 here, but it is not in production anymore. If this, the only one I got, gets broken... Then I'm really smoked! :) I prefer USB modems before net-modems, because rebooting the IPCop will also reset the USB modem attached. /Peter

Oh yeah, I just used it with a 16 port switch to network my office with 10 computers. I was going trough the switch on a netgear router and it was always needing to be restarted and it caused weird problems with computers on the network seeing other computers. All is better now.

We have 5 IPCOP servers, mainly used for VPN tunnels between small branch offices and the main office. They are also used to restrict Internet access. We plan on removing the two in the main office and switching to Cisco routers instead, only because we feel the Cisco product is more reliable, from a Hardware point of view. We will however continue to use the IPCOP's in the branch offices and for backup in the main office.

IPCOP is the most stable FW on internet, but i have some idea for next generation IPCOP. 1. I think IPCOP must be support loadbalancing for 2 or more source gateway internet, like pfsense. 2. Can IPCOP support Sierra Wireless AirCard 880/881 ? http://www.sierrawireless.com/faq/ShowFAQ.aspx?ID=1076 3. Can IPCOP support VLAN and TRUNKable? 4. Maybe IPCOP on road map must be add design to make and produce and sell it littleboard/smallboard/routerboard(like MikroTik) n because to many people love IPCOP but IPCOP need help to develop, ithink this one of alternate idea to make IPCOP stable, and biger ever in the future.....
